In Australia, it is compulsory for businesses to hold a workers’ compensation policy in every jurisdiction where they engage workers, unless they have been authorised to operate as a self-insurer. “Workers” includes all people directly employed by the employer, and will also include contractors who are “deemed” to be workers.
