The Paid Parental Leave Act 2010 implements a Government-funded, paid parental leave (PPL) scheme applicable to employees who have or adopt a child. The scheme provides up to 20 weeks’ pay at the National Minimum Wage.
The PPL Scheme changed significantly for children born after 1 July 2023. The main changes are:
• Combining the previous entitlements of 18 weeks for a primary carer and 2 weeks dad and partner pay to a combined 20-week period of pay that can be accessed more flexibly.
• Removing the requirement that generally only the birth mother can apply for paid parental leave, and removing the previous categories of primary, secondary and tertiary carers to permit a larger range of people to apply for paid parental leave.
• Replacing the previous individual income threshold test with a combined family income test.
• Increasing the portion of flexible paid parental leave that can be taken as flexible days from 30 days to 100 days.
