Mal has over 15 years’ experience in WHS and HSEQ management roles in the chemical, mining, construction, and education sectors. In addition, he has over 5 years’ experience as a health and safety Inspector with the NSW regulator.

Mal’s extensive experience can assist you to understand your business needs and develop and implement practical solutions.

Originally a tradesman fitter-machinist employed in heavy industry, Mal pursued his passion for science completing a Bachelor of Science with a major in chemistry. This led to a role as Systems Manager for a multi-national chemical manufacturing company, where he was trained in integrated HSEQ management systems in Canada, the UK and Belgium.

Mal developed his expertise in compliance, incident investigations and report-writing skills as a health and safety Inspector, and supervisor of Inspectors, with WorkCover NSW. Attending the scene of many serious incidents drove home to Mal the vital importance of health and safety risk management, both in preventing human tragedy and ensuring business success. This inspired him to move on and establish his own consulting business specialising in HSEQ management systems for small to medium enterprises, serving customers in the rail maintenance, construction, labour hire and engineering industries, before taking an opportunity to work with a multi-national mining company as a HSE Systems Advisor.

Prior to joining AI Group, Mal held WHS management roles in the education and training sector, leading teams of WHS specialists to implement methodologies adapted from high-risk industries to improve health and safety performance, ensure compliance and reduce risk. This included designing, implementing and improving WHS management systems including WHS policies, strategic plans, data collection and reporting, and processes for risk management, incident reporting and investigations, audits and inspections, and contractor management.

Passionate about problem solving, Mal brings a very practical approach to health and safety. He is committed to engaging with you and your people, listening to the needs of the business, to uncover how things can improve.
