Normally associated with Public Service, Codes of Conduct are becoming more common in the private sector. At the private business level, Codes of Conduct, ethical codes, and ‘guidelines for behaviour’ all aim to provide visible signs that a business is aware of the need for ethical behaviour and require a commitment to such behaviour from its workforce.

Codes of conduct generally tend to have one or more of three foci:

  1. Behaviour that impacts employees;
  2. Behaviour that impact the business; or
  3. Behaviour that impacts society and the environment.
