"Ai Group has been a keen participant in the roundtables and consultations held over many months by Allegra Spender to focus on the importance of modernising Australia's taxation arrangements and principles that could underpin future directions," Innes Willox, Chief Executive of Ai Group, Australia's national association of employers, said today.
"There is broad recognition that the tax system that has evolved in Australia is increasingly not fit for purpose at a time of significant demographic challenge and technological change.
"The task is to reshape and reboot the tax system to encourage national and enterprise-based growth, higher productivity, competitiveness and investment while meeting changing community needs and expectations.
"We support the intent behind the Tax Principles communique released today and very much hope it leads to further and broader discussions across the Australian community to achieve a deeper understanding of the issues that we see as essential for a meaningful modernisation of Australia's taxation arrangements.
"As the communique makes clear, this is far from an agreed package of reforms. We hope, however, it is a very solid foundation for further work to help build awareness of what needs to be fixed and adjusted as well as identify the best ways to prepare our tax arrangements for the challenges and opportunities that we currently face and will face over coming decades," Mr Willox said.
