The Australian Industry Group strongly welcomes the Victorian Government's economic survival package to support businesses and jobs, announced this morning by the Premier and the Treasurer.

Tim Piper, the Victorian Head of the national employer association Ai Group, said: "The announcement recognises the crisis conditions many smaller companies in Victoria are already experiencing.

"The provision of full payroll tax refunds to small and medium businesses with payrolls of less than $3 million is significant and will help maintain employment.

"Discussions with the Treasurer have been positive, with the Government recognising the intensely difficult position for employers and it has committed to providing ongoing support.

"The Business Support Fund which has also been established by the Government with $500 million funding will support the hardest-hit sectors. We are pleased the Government has asked Ai Group to help administer that fund in a way that benefits all Victorians."

Mr Piper said that in his discussions with government it was also noted that measures for bigger businesses which are also major employers should be considered in the near term.

"The economic uncertainty created by the pandemic has necessitated extraordinary actions that are beyond normal budgetary measures.

"We welcome the Government's willingness to take these steps and we will continue to work collaboratively to support all businesses and workers in the State. We are all in this together," Mr Piper said.
