"The announcement by the Victorian Government to financially support the State's TAFE and public training system during this crisis will help ensure the training sector will be there ready to teach the skills needed by industry when the economy eventually returns to normal levels of activity," Tim Piper, Victorian Head of the national employer association Ai Group, said today.
"The vocational training sector provides an important service to businesses in almost every industry. They train our tradespeople, our technicians and importantly at this time our nurses and health care workers. Many people in the IT sector gain their skills at TAFE, and IT is becoming increasingly important to industry with so many people working remotely. This announcement will keep the TAFE system running and help it develop its own online and remote learning capabilities.
"I would urge the Victorian Government to also consider providing support for the private training sector. Private training companies makes up a substantial proportion of the state’s training capacity and often train people in niche areas that the public system does not cover. They too are feeling the effects of this pandemic," Mr Piper said.
