Australian Industry Group's new Performance of Business Index (Australian PBI) will be released for the first time this Friday 7 February.

The Australian PBI is a weighted composite of Ai Group’s Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI®), Australian Performance of Services Index (PSI®), and Australian Performance of Construction Index (PCI®).

Australian PBI results are based on responses from a representative sample of around 500 private-sector businesses per month, drawn from the manufacturing, construction and services industries that account between them for 72% of Australia’s total industry output, 62% of total GDP and 89% of all filled jobs.

The various indexes that form part of the Australian PBI are leading indicators of industry activity. They are released well ahead of official data and have historically tracked closely to key ABS economic data including production volumes, business sales, employment growth, prices and wages in the relevant industries. The Australian PBI capacity utilisation index provides a guide to likely movements in total business investment and the unemployment rate.

The new Australian PBI will be released on the fifth working day of the month, together with Ai Group’s Australian Performance of Services Index (Australian PSI®). The Australian PSI® report will still be available in addition to the Australian PBI.

Our new release dates are:

  • Australian PMI® – First working day of the month.
  • Australian PCI® – Third working day of the month.
  • Australian PBI and Australian PSI® – Fifth working day of the month.
