The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games should be treated as a vehicle to build the city’s reputation as opposed to just a destination, according to Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.
Speaking at a Queensland Media Club lunch, Mr Schrinner said the potential rewards for Brisbane were greater than any other previous host city.
“Other cities had great reputations already,“ he said.
“We have an amazing opportunity to build a legacy greater the Expo and the Commonwealth Games.”
However, he said there was a significant risk that we would not take full advantage of the opportunity.
He said there needed to be a mindset that “considers those that come before and after”.
Mr Schrinner said it was important the Games showcased First Nations culture and allowed them to benefit by including indigenous businesses in the delivery of the Games.
He said being climate positive was important as well seizing the opportunity to address the region’s transport needs.
“Transport to the Gabba and Brisbane Live is great, but what about other suburban centres?
“When (the SEQ Council of) Mayors came together for the Games, it was because of the challenges of growth and the need for a dedicated transport infrastructure plan that delivered a lasting legacy,” Mr Schrinner said.
He said for that to be achieved mass transit planning needed to start now.
Water security was also vital and Mr Schrinner called for an Olympic Water Infrastructure Plan.
“We don’t want the world to see a brown city in drought.”
He said while we may not be able to build another dam, “let’s raise Wivenhoe’s wall by 8m.’’
Revamping Brisbane’s nightlife was another goal.
“Let’s become the Barcelona of the southern hemisphere.”
To do that he pushed for 24-hour trading in the suburbs; no lockout laws and changes to licensing regulations.
