This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals. If you choose, you may sit an assessment after the training to become accredited as a Mental Health First Aider.

Mental Health problems covered:

  • Depression 
  • Anxiety 
  • Psychosis 
  • Substance use 
  • Eating disorders 
  • Gambling problem

Mental Health crisis situations covered: 

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours 
  • Non-suicidal self injury 
  • Panic attacks 
  • Traumatic events 
  • Severe effects of drug or alcohol use 
  • Severe psychotic states 
  • Aggressive behaviours 

Learning outcomes 

At the completion of this topic, participants should be able to: 

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adults such as depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use problems 
  • Know how to provide initial help 
  • Know where and how to get professional help 
  • Know how to assist an adult experiencing mental health problems or crisis using a practical, evidence based action plan 
  • Know how to provide first aid in a crisis situation 

Option to become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider with Mental Health First Aid Australia.
