The Victorian Government is providing wage subsidies for Victorian businesses of all sizes to boost their digital capability. The Digital Jobs Program connects businesses to talented, mid‑career workers with cutting edge skills and a proven track record in the workplace. Participants first complete a 12‑week industry recognised course with a leading Victorian education provider, learning digital skills that are in demand across the digital economy. Companies then have access to this unique talent pool and receive a $5,000 wage subsidy for each 12‑week work placement or entry-level job they offer.

Diversity in tech is key. Most participants are over 30 years of age, and more than half are women. Participants come from diverse backgrounds and bring experience from working across a wide range of sectors.

Before reaching employers, the candidates have been through a competitive three‑step selection process which assesses each participant’s employability and readiness to move into a digital career. The selected talent pool has demonstrated a number of critical competencies: a growth mindset, critical thinking, problem solving, working with people, resilience and planning and delivering.

The digital skill sets involved include:

Artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning

IT operations and support

Cloud computing

Product management

Customer relationship management (CRM)

Programming / software development

Cyber security

Project management (agile)

Data analytics

User experience / user interface (UX/UI)

Digital marketing

Web development

Enterprise resource planning (ERP)

Involved employers have said that the participants, with at least 5-10 years’ work experience, have been of high quality. Access has been opened to a whole new talent pool offering fresh perspectives, up‑to‑date digital skills, applied business knowledge and transferable soft skills. Employers have also expressed that it supports their corporate social responsibility efforts and provides mentoring opportunities that build leadership skills for existing staff.
