The Digital Skills Organisation (DSO) is leading an innovative new initiative that brings together key firms in Melbourne’s Cremorne Technology area with Kangan Bendigo TAFE to address the companies’ common need for talent with relevant digital and technology skills.
The Cremorne precinct has been developing a reputation as a fast-growing digital hub which is host to many of Australia’s most well-known technology brands. In 2021 the DSO launched a pilot with Kangan and companies in the precinct including carsales, LiveTiles, REA, InfoXchange and MYOB to put in place a pipeline for entry level talent using the skills-based approach.
The participating companies have been highly invested in broadening talent within their precinct as their engagement allows direct influence on the training of prospective employees to ensure they can match the skills with their business needs.
To ensure training is delivered that benefits both learners and employers, the trial project revolves around a work-integrated learning-based traineeship that includes apprenticeships, “on the job” experience and class-based training using real-world scenarios.
As the pilot project expands the funnel in a local area for people who would not normally have considered a career in digital, it will also have a significant focus on delivering diversity across the sector.
The project is now finalising the design phase where employers have come together to select the skills clusters which most meet their needs. The course is scheduled to commence during 2022.
