A performance management system is a set of tools, processes and actions that enable organisations to maximise employee performance, and ensure that performance expectations of individuals are aligned to the organisations business strategy.

Strong performance management practices are critical to the success of almost any organisation. When it is effective, performance management drives positive operational outcomes by developing and promoting the desired attitudes, behaviours and results in employees.

However, performance management is one of the key areas where organisations struggle.  A poorly implemented or managed performance management system can result in ineffective or even detrimental outcomes. Despite these difficulties organisations can expect positive outcomes from implementing and monitoring a well-planned and thought out performance management process, and where managers and employees recognise the value of the process, these challenges can be overcome.

This Performance Management System Evaluation Checklist  has been designed to assist organisations to evaluate the success of an existing or new performance management system through obtaining feedback from users of the system and to understand its effectiveness, which can form the basis of review.
