According to Safe Work Australia (Notified Fatalities Statistical Report 2010-2011), incidents related to plant and machinery contribute to a significant proportion of workplace deaths in Australia.

While safety statistics related to plant and machinery have improved in recent years, machine guarding failures continue to cause serious injury.
