Health and Safety Resource Centre

Many workers spend 50% or more of their days sitting. A sedentary lifestyle can be dangerous to your workers’ health. A sedentary lifestyle increases the chances of being overweight, developing type 2 diabetes or heart disease, and experiencing depression and anxiety. The less sitting or lying down workers do during the day, the better their chances for living a healthy life. Workers who stand or move around during the day, have a lower risk of early death than those who sit at a desk.

This Toolbox Talk Topic includes information on the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle and ways to increase physical activity to reduce the risk. This topic is suitable for any workplace at which workers spend a large portion of their day sitting.

Once the Toolbox Talk is completed and employees have been consulted, and had their views heard, records of discussions and actions should be recorded in the Toolbox Talk Record Form.
