This Sample Pre-Start Checklist is an example of a mobile crane checklist and to be used as a guide only. Other equipment and activities can follow a similar style to the checklist as outlined below.

A pre-start checklist is a list of tasks or items that must be reviewed, inspected, or completed before starting a job, task, or operation, especially in environments where safety, efficiency, or compliance is critical. These checklists are commonly used in industries like construction, manufacturing, aviation, mining, and logistics. The purpose of a Pre-Start Checklist is to:

  • Ensure equipment or machinery is safe to use.
  • Confirm that workers are prepared and aware of hazards.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks before work begins.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.

As demonstrated in the crane pre-start inspection below, the common elements in a Pre-Start Checklist include:

  • Visual inspection of equipment (e.g., leaks, damage, wear).
  • Operational checks (e.g., brakes, lights, alarms).
  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) check.
  • Hazard identification in the work area.
  • Verification of permits or documentation.
  • Sign-off by responsible personnel.
