An employer is not obliged to provide a reference about a current or former employee. This is the case whether the request for a reference has come from the employee themselves, a prospective employer or even any other third party such as a bank or real estate agent.
These days it is more common for references to be given over the phone, but some employees may request a written reference from their employer when they leave.
