There are occasions when employees will be required to perform ‘higher duties’ for a short period and other times when an employee will step up into a higher position and be ‘acting’ for a longer period – e.g. 12 months. This is commonly used when the incumbent of the higher role takes parental leave, a career break or are also stepping up into a higher position.
An employee may be temporarily appointed/seconded to an ‘acting’ position, where they will be required to perform a role at a higher classification due to the role’s current incumbent being away for their position. The employee undertakes the core role and responsibilities for the duration of the time that the incumbent is away and at the conclusion, it is expected that they will return to their substantive position.
As most scenarios are unique to the individual and the business, if it recommended that employers seek advice from Ai Group to ensure compliance with the relevant underpinning industrial instrument.
