Reference checks are a last opportunity to verify information the candidate has provided, validate their personal suitability and probe issues more deeply to get a fuller sense of their values, nature, approach to work and how they interact with others.

A minimum of two reference checks should be undertaken, ideally with one being the candidate’s current or previous manager or supervisor.

It is recommended that reference checks take place after all selection methods have concluded.
