Unfortunately, COVID-19 has put employers in unfamiliar territory with tough decisions being made daily. Delivering bad news (such as a redundancy or stand down is not easy at the best of times, but it is particularly challenging at a time when the nation and world are operating on a day by day basis.

Employers may not be able to change the ‘what’, but they are in control of the ‘how’. The following checklist provides some practical tips and insights into how to best deliver bad news and can be used in preparation before a difficult conversation.  Check out our website information and resources to support employers through the impacts of the COVID-19.

If it is a redundancy situation then consultation requirements will need to be met. For assistance a Redundancy Conversation (First Meeting) Script and Redundancy Conversation - Notice of Termination (Final Meeting) Script is available with further redundancy resources to found here under the heading ‘Redundancy’.

Employers are encouraged to seek tailored advice before having a discussion with employees that impact their employment. Members who require assistance should contact us or call the Ai Group Workplace Advice Line on 1300 55 66 77.
