SWOT is the acronym used for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

The SWOT tool is used to evaluate the position of the organisation; in particular, the internal and external factors that contribute to new opportunities and/or threats and the identification of actions and strategies to address risks and maximise opportunities.

Organisations can use this tool in a collective meeting that has a representative group of key business areas/stakeholders so as to ensure a balanced and well-informed examination of the issues.  The output of the SWOT can then be used to inform the workplace planning process and the resulting Action Plan.

SWOT analysis is also commonly conducted during the Business Planning Process.  If so, the output from the Business Planning process can be used in the workforce planning and development processes
