Compassionate leave, previously known as ‘bereavement leave’, is leave that can be taken by an employee when a member of their immediate family or household sustains an illness or injury that poses a serious threat to their life, or dies. These ‘permissible occasions’ can be confusing for employers as the entitlement covers illness and injury as well as death.
