The review is critical of the EPA’s handling of chemical waste regulation, especially its pollution reporting processes, its intelligence systems, its antiquated waste transport certificates and its policies and procedures in the area.
The Victorian Head of the Australian Industry Group, Tim Piper said: "The review recognised that the EPA must work closely with the community and business to ensure a better result.
"The Review proposes the EPA more closely monitor those businesses which tried to act outside the law.
"It's important that the EPA focuses mostly on companies likely to flout the law and less on those they know well, but where they may find minor transgressions. It’s not enough to simply justify the EPA’s role, it’s to make sure the worst examples of pollution are prevented.
"We especially noted the need to improve the waste transport certificates. Knowing what waste is going where and how, should help to police the sector and get rid of the ‘cowboys’. It’s something we have been seeking for many years.
"The transparent and consultative attitude adopted by the EPA to this review was refreshing and Ai Group looks forward to continuing to work with the EPA in the lead up to its new legislation," Mr Piper said.
