The announcement, which also includes 60 per cent local content, is a filip for Victorian manufacturing and a positive for skilled jobs in the State.
"This will provide significant opportunities for suppliers to the rail industry and certainly hundreds of new jobs in this sector. Coupled with the partnership that Downer Rail, CRCC and Plenary will undertake with Toyota and both Chisholm and Swinburne, it will have the significant benefit of helping to transition automotive manufacturing workers to the project," said the Victorian Head of Ai Group, Tim Piper.
"This project has the potential to boost the competitive strength of Victorian rail manufacturing, and Ai Group emphasises the importance of leveraging from the project to create globally competitive capabilities and export opportunities for the rail sector in Australia," Mr Piper said.
"No doubt all Victorians will look forward to these trains coming on line and continuing to improve our public transport system," Mr Piper said.
