New VIC public holiday will cost business and the community

The Australian Industry Group has criticised the State Government's public holiday backflip in proclaiming an additional public holiday on Christmas Day this year.

"The Government continues to impose additional, unnecessary costs on businesses and the community. This financial year we will have 15 public holidays. We are becoming the State of public holidays," the Victorian Head of Ai Group, Tim Piper, said today.

"As a result of this decision employees will now receive public holiday pay, often 2.5 times normal pay and above, on five of the nine days over the Christmas New Year period.

"The Government needs to better appreciate the cost to and loss to business of these self-serving additional public holidays. In addition to our ridiculous ‘Footy Friday’ public holiday it shows the Government is out of touch with the economic realities of business," Mr Piper said.

The Australian Industry Group has called on the State Government to remove Footy Friday from next year's public holidays and revert to a reasonable public holiday regime.

"This new public holiday for Christmas Day could cost business as much as $100 million and is the thin end of the wedge," Mr Piper said.
