Union rallies in the construction industry – Ai Group comment

"Today's union rallies in the construction industry have disrupted many construction projects. The disruption is not acceptable," Australian Industry Group Chief Executive, Innes Willox, said today.

"Once again the unions have made false claims about the ABCC and the Building Code. The most spurious of their claims is that the ABCC and Building Code adversely impact upon work health and safety (WHS).

"WHS is a matter that is largely regulated by State and Territory laws and Regulators. The ABCC is responsible for investigating and prosecuting breaches of industrial laws, not WHS laws. The ABCC does have an important role in stopping unions using bogus safety disputes as an industrial weapon against employers. These union tactics breed community cynicism about safety concerns raised by union officials and delegates and ultimately do damage to the workers' cause.

"The Building Code contains numerous provisions aimed at improving safety on work sites, including drug and alcohol testing and the exclusion of contractors from Government projects if they fail to comply with WHS laws," Mr Willox said.
