Workplace Literacy and Numeracy Success

"The Australian Industry Group today released a report highlighting the success of a workplace literacy and numeracy pilot program. The program involved a skill set of units from the Foundation Skills Training Package delivered to existing employees within three manufacturing sites in three different states.

"This is an excellent example of Ai Group backing up our policy with real workplace assistance to companies in a major area of workforce development," Ai Group Chief Executive, Innes Willox, said.

All employers responded positively to the program, the benefits for their companies and the improvements for the participating employees. Employers appreciated the customised training delivered on site by experienced practitioners.

One of the participating companies was Haigh's Chocolates in Adelaide. "In our workplace we worked with supervisors to simplify and clarify processes. The participants were able to identify areas for improvement which increased their confidence," said Training Manager, Marion Veal.

Mr Willox added: "The success of the pilot program highlights the need for a dedicated workforce literacy and numeracy program. On the basis of the results of this program we urge the Australian Government to reconsider the introduction of a national workplace literacy and numeracy program. Ai Group is well-positioned to support such a program."
