Greens four-day work weeks and six-hour days are fanciful

"The ideas floated today by Greens Leader, Senator Richard Di Natale, of four-day work weeks and six-hour work days are fanciful and unaffordable," Ai Group Chief Executive, Innes Willox, said today.

"While we would all like more leisure time, it would be unrealistic and naive to expect businesses to pay the same wages to employees if significantly less hours are worked. For the benefit of the Australian economy, businesses need to remain competitive and viable. This is the only way that they can continue to employ Australians.

"The whole community benefits from economic growth and, similarly, without economic growth, the whole community suffers. All political parties need to pursue policies which foster economic growth while, of course, ensuring an appropriate safety net is in place to protect those who need it. Australia has a very comprehensive safety net.

"We don’t need a conversation about four-day weeks and six-hour days, but we do need a conversation about how Australia's workplace relations system could be more productive and flexible," Mr Willox said.
