Federal funding urgently needed for Cross River Rail

Ai Group's QLD State Director Jemina Dunn has today called for urgent State and Federal government collaboration to deliver Brisbane's long overdue $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project.

"We are heartened to see media reports today that the Prime Minister, Mr Turnbull, spoke favourably yesterday about the possibility of Federal funding to assist in finally getting this critical productivity lifting infrastructure project off the ground," Ms Dunn said.

"Ai Group and its members have long supported the project which would provide significant short- and long-term benefits to the QLD economy. These benefits were recognised by Infrastructure Australia in its 2012-13 assessment of the Cross River Rail proposal which it assessed as having a suitably robust cost-benefit ratio and as being in close alignment with the strategic priorities both of Infrastructure Australia and Queensland's state strategies.

"In addition to providing much needed short-term work for the State's ailing civil construction sector, benefits would also flow down the supply chain to local manufacturers and SEQ communities who would get better access to high quality public transport.

"Significant benefits would continue in the longer term through the easing of congestion and the unlocking of development opportunities around station precincts.

"We now hope that the PM's positive approach to the Cross River Rail Project will be followed up with urgent action. We urge both the Federal and State governments to work together to fund this critical once-in-a-generation infrastructure project which is so important to SEQ and the broader QLD economy," Ms Dunn said.
