Amendments to the temporary fuel surcharge (commencing 17 April 2023)
The New South Wales Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) has recently varied the temporary fuel surcharge (Surcharge) payable under the NSW Transport Industry - General Carriers Contract Determination 2017 (Contract Determination).
Members were previously advised that the IRC had inserted provisions in the Contract Determination requiring the payment of a Surcharge in response to a significant rise in the price of diesel fuel in early 2022. The IRC conducts proceedings each month to determine whether the quantum of the Surcharge should be either increased or decreased to reflect movements in the average price of diesel in the preceding month.
When will the new Surcharge commence and how long will it apply for?
The Surcharge that will be applicable during pay periods that commence between 17 April and 14 May 2023 is set out in the 1st and 2nd table. For nearly all vehicles, the Surcharge has decreased as compared to the Surcharge applicable in the preceding period.
The Surcharge that is applicable during pay periods that commenced between 20 March and 16 April 2023 is set out in the 3rd and 4th tables.
When is the next variation to the Surcharge expected?
It is expected that the next variation to the Surcharge will be issued by 15 May 2023, and that the variation will apply to pay periods that commence on or after that date until 18 June 2023. Members will continue to be updated regarding any subsequent changes to the Surcharge.
