"The sense of uncertainty created by the ongoing and new restrictions announced for Victoria today leaves businesses and the community in a state of limbo that is simply not good enough. With both the State Government and businesses wallowing in a growing sea of debt, the Government should be giving more consideration to the predicament of businesses," Tim Piper, the Victorian Head of the Australian Industry Group, said today.
"Almost all COVID-19 cases in the State have a known source, yet we prevent both the community and businesses from operating in a COVID-normal way. It forces them into a position where they struggle to be viable.
"Jobs will be on the line, businesses will be questioning whether to reopen or remain willing to stay in Victoria. We don't want that situation. We need a business community that has confidence.
"The government restrictions also mean other states will be less willing to open to Victoria and Victorians. The ongoing cost of these restrictions, both directly and indirectly, are enormous and the ramifications into the future will be serious for the State's economy and the community's sense of well-being.
"The Government should be working to create certainty and boost confidence – not exaggerate the risks from a handful of cases. Without details of health advice it is unclear why this decision to maintain strict restrictions has been imposed.
"There is a palpable feeling of unease in the community caused by ongoing restrictions rather than taking a more localised and proportionate response to dealing with COVID," Mr Piper said.
