Australian Industry Group Chief Executive Innes Willox has launched the most comprehensive research on the employer experience of apprenticeships and traineeships in years.

The report, Apprenticeships and traineeships: The employer perspective, was created by Ai Group Centre for Education and Training to shine a light on the experiences of the employers of Australia's more than 300,000 active apprentices and trainees.

Mr Willox, who launched the report today with the support of Caroline Smith, Brett Hall and Peter Canavan at Inver Engineering in Altona, Victoria, said: "Employers report that employing apprentices and trainees is increasingly costly and complex.

"An alarming 96 per cent of the employers we surveyed said they faced barriers when hiring apprentices and trainees.

"Yet the role of employers within this system is vital. No apprentice or trainee can commence their training without an employer first being willing and able to employ them."

At the launch, Inver CEO Anthony Clack said apprentices were integral to his company, which had doubled its staff in the past five years.
