The Queensland Government handed down the State Budget on Tuesday 21 June.
Rebecca Andrews, Ai Group State Head Queensland, attended the Budget Lock-up with the Premier and the Treasurer. Ai Group had called for no new taxes or levies and no increases to existing taxes and levies. Like many in the budget lock-up we were surprised and disappointed by the three new taxes on business, including the increases in payroll tax for larger employers to fund mental health.
While Ai Group commends the Government for investing in mental health, this should not be funded by taxes or levies on businesses, most of whom are already working to address mental health. What will also be interesting to continue to watch is whether the new progressive royalty rates for Queensland coal have an impact on investment in the Resource sector in Queensland.
