Manufacturers in many places are facing severe competition mainly from the high Australian dollar eroding both export and domestic markets. Some companies' traditional markets have evaporated and gone overseas and will probably never come back. A great many others are comfortable in supplying the coal mining industry but this demand has softened. For some there is a compelling need to reinvent themselves but the way forward can be unclear.
This network has been formed to bring about a group of likeminded (yet different) manufacturers, engineers, researchers and educators who, within the confines of protection of confidentiality, exchange stories and experiences about reinvention or new invention in their business as well as new products, materials and processes. Members can spark off each other and create more new ideas.
Another aim is to grow collective wisdom about how companies can have a significant place in "the smart economy" of the future, which could be useful in providing a spotlight on the future for others in the industry.
Meetings of the Cluster follow an informal structure over light refreshments where people can meet, offer a bit about themselves and their business and exchange ideas with each other.
The Cluster meets regularly.
