The Australian Industry Group Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index (Australian PMI®) edged 0.1 points higher to 61.8 in May, indicating an eighth consecutive month of recovery following the severe disruptions of COVID-19 in Q2 of 2020 (readings above 50 points indicate expansion in activity, with higher results indicating a faster rate of expansion).
"The Victorian Government's support package for businesses impacted by the COVID-19 lockdown is a welcome down payment that will somewhat soften the blow of the $2.5 Billion losses expected in just a week of tight restrictions," Tim Piper, the Victorian Head of the employer organisation Ai Group said today.
The national employer association Ai Group has estimated the Victorian 7-day lockdown will cost the state’s businesses as much as $2.5 billion per week of hard lockdown in lost or deferred consumer spending.
"Business is looking to the Victorian government to ensure its approach to the COVID outbreak announced today remains proportionate and targeted," Tim Piper, Victorian head of the national employer association Ai Group said today.
"Business is shocked at the approach taken by Government to the employees and customers of the largest businesses in the State. The extra levy will impact most directly on them. Its indirect impacts extend to the level of private sector investment and employment in the State and because of that will harm the broader Victorian economy," Tim Piper, the Victorian Head of the national employer association Ai Group said today.

The Victorian Head of the national employer association Ai Group, Tim Piper, welcomed the Victorian Budget's focus on mental health, skills and education while recognising the concerns of some larger businesses about the new payroll tax levy.
"The benefit to taxpayers and energy users of the Commonwealth's new gas generator at Kurri Kurri depends entirely on the speed of the power sector transition to net zero emissions. Clear thinking and clear messages about that transition would allay many concerns," Innes Willox, Chief Executive of national employer association Ai Group said today.
"With recovery still tentative, Victoria's businesses are hoping that tomorrow's Budget does no harm and imposes no additional imposts on businesses and employment," Mr Tim Piper, Ai Group's Victorian Head said today.
