Transcript - Establishing a framework for a successful business
Every day we are experiencing an ever more rapidly changing domestic and global business environment.
For your business to improve, grow and to be sustainable it must adapt to these changes, overcome their challenges and seize the opportunities they create.
To succeed your organisation must identify and continually develop the key business capabilities and core competencies needed to develop and deliver competitive offers.
This does not happen by chance or by wishful thinking.
Successful organisations are characterised by their leadership, organisational culture, management and a framework of effective business processes that make it happen.
This framework includes a number of essential capabilities, disciplines and business practices.
Let's go through some of the key points for you as a business owner to think about.
Strategic Management & Leadership - Do you know where you want your business to be in 3 years and the major steps you are taking to get there?
Customer focus and marketing - Do you know your customers and truly understand their needs and how these might be changing in relation to your offer?
People, skills and training - Do you have and are you developing the people and skills you need to implement your current plans and future strategy?
Innovation and creativity - Do you have a system which generates new ideas and turns commercial opportunities, that meet customer needs and can beat the competition, into reality?
Financial & commercial management - Do you have timely financial information on results and trends, track costs and project cash flows and monitor your purchasing system and assets?
Operational process improvement - Are you implementing a programme that continually focuses on improving your critical business processes and capabilities?
Information systems - Do your information systems support your strategy and create competitive advantage?
Networks, partnerships and external assistance and knowledge - Do you get information and assistance on new markets, opportunities and innovation?
Trade & Export Development - Are you identifying and capitalising on international opportunities for both inwards and outwards business growth?
Quality management systems - Do your quality management systems ensure standards compliance and improve the quality of your processes, products and services?
Environmental management and Occupational Health and Safety management' - Are you achieving OHS and Environmental best practice?
If your answer to any of the questions was "no" then you need to consider developing these capabilities.
You should prioritise the development of the framework I have just outlined including business capabilities and core competencies, along with an analysis and understanding of your customer's real needs, to deliver your offer so that it beats the alternatives available from competitors.
For example, we recently worked with a member company who did just that. Through employee development, the application of new design and manufacturing technologies, lean manufacturing techniques and on-line ordering and purchasing this firm has been able to grow a significant global market for their products and service.
