The Australian Industry Group today supported the key findings of a Lowy Institute Blue Ribbon Panel which called for renewed investment in Australia’s diplomatic capabilities as part of a broader global engagement to support Australia’s needs and interests.

"Decisions on the future resources and language capabilities of DFAT are vital to Australia's future global role. The time has come with the developing global economic crisis to super-charge Australia’s diplomatic effort to achieve maximum strategic and commercial outcomes for Australia," the chief executive of the Australian Industry Group, Heather Ridout said.

"The Lowy Institute report "Australia’s Diplomatic Deficit", provides a strong case for Australia to further develop its global diplomatic resources. The recommendations to increase the staffing of DFAT and to develop the focus on areas of emerging interests are particularly welcome, especially at a time when industry is increasingly looking to broaden its export potential.

"While the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and associated agencies have undoubtedly worked well in advancing Australia’s interests, the current global economic and financial crisis provides a timely point for a renewed engagement in areas of real strategic and commercial interest," Mrs Ridout said.

"There is little doubt that over time DFAT has become relatively under-resourced. We particularly welcome the report’s recommendations that the department should develop even closer links with industry to work towards nationally economically beneficial outcomes, especially in new and emerging markets, especially in Asia, South America and Africa," Mrs Ridout said.
