Statement by Heather Ridout
Chief Executive Australian Industry Group

"With the Christmas/New Year shutdown over for many businesses this week, and with companies looking to the year ahead, Ai Group is encouraging employers to consider hiring new apprentices and accessing the extra Commonwealth funding available only until the end of February," Ai Group Chief Executive Heather Ridout said.

"While skill shortages were less evident during the global economic and financial crisis, as we start to see a return to growth it's clear that the shortages were just below the surface.

"Our research has shown that during the coming year skills shortages are anticipated for a range of occupations. Most prominent among these are technicians and trades workers and engineers.

"As a short-term measure, and in response to calls for action from Ai Group and other industry bodies, the Federal Government in December introduced the Apprentice Kickstart Bonus which offers additional financial incentives to employers who hire a new apprentice in a traditional trade.

"All up, employers will receive $7,350 for each new apprentice commencement before 28 February 2010 (which includes the additional $3,350 Bonus). This will hopefully take some pressure off training budgets and help address the forecast 20% drop in apprenticeship starts.

"Given the importance of nipping the re-emergence of skill shortages in the bud, the Government should also remain open to extending the program," Mrs Ridout said.
