More than 94% of Australia’s secondary schools offering senior secondary programs now offer vocational education and training (VET) to their senior students. This means that students can gain practical work skills and nationally recognised VET qualifications as part of their school education. Ai Group strongly supports efforts to improve post-school options for school students and their work readiness. These programs contribute to the long-term development and improvement of the skill pool available to industry. VET courses have been developed in consultation with business and industry and are based on Industry Training Packages. They are delivered in school classrooms, TAFE colleges and by private training providers. Through a planned program of learning in education and training settings, students learn about the world of work, the expectations of employers and the career options and alternative pathways available. VET subjects give students the chance to find out whether they like a particular job and if it matches their expectations. Workplace learning is frequently a component of VET in schools, where students undertake work placements as part of their vocational education.
